Grindelwald, Lucerne, Zurich, Switzerland

Lots of connections on the day we went from Belgium to Switzerland.

This is the little train that we took from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald.

Our Airbnb.  We were in the top apartment (see the two little windows).  The apartment was above a bar.  When we arrived, they said that there would be a big street party that evening.  It's a Wednesday night tradition in the summer, complete with a band and bar.  It turned out to be delightful and very family friendly with lots of children around and even the music was country or folk for  the first couple of hours.  It wrapped up around midnight.

The darling little house across the street from our's.

Our bathroom.

The kitchen.

The living room.

The view out our back window.

It got more active as it got later.

Later. . .

The area that we explored. Mt. Eiger, Grindelwald. . . We took the gondola up to Maennlichen and then hiked downhill to a train about 8 miles later (we loved the downhill slope of the hike!).  We had hoped to hike in the "First" area (to the left of the map), but weather got in our way and we had to abandon that idea.

We took cable cars up to Mt. Maennlichen

We found these great teeter-totters at restaurants at the top!

The beginning of our very picturesque 8 mile hike.

We didn't have a tripod, but fortunately, Eric carries string in his pocket which came in handy for a family photo.

Grindelwald family photo:

Cows dotted all of the hillsides.  They each had a large cowbell around their necks so we were serenaded by constant cowbells ringing with all different tones and pitches.

I LOVED the wildflowers that were everywhere along the path.

This area looked so much like Oregon.

We ate lunch in a small shady overhang of an old building.  Several minutes later, we found this beautiful overlook with a bench.

We talked a little about Lehi's counsel to his sons at this point. (1 Nephi 2:10---Of course, I was thinking firm and steadfast and immovable in keeping the commandments of the Lord like the mountains, but it actually refers to being firm and steadfast like the valley)

Trumalbach Falls.

This scene greeted us on our last morning:
We decided to forgo our planned hike that day and head to Lucerne.

Transportation Museum in Lucerne.  Very enjoyable.

Kapelbrucke Bridge in Lucerne.

The Kapellbrucke bridge which spans diagonally over the Reuss River in Lucerne provided welcome cover for many people.  We were glad to join them.  According to Wikipedia, it contains a number of interior paintings by Hans Heinrich Wagmann that depict Lucerne's history dating back to the 17th century.  About 2/3 of the interior paintings were destroyed in a fire that burned the bridge in 1993.  Thirty were restored.  It is the oldest covered bridge in Europe, built in 1333.  It is the oldest surviving truss bridge in the world.

Since we had the afternoon free, and we had purchased the Swiss travel pass, we took the train to Zurich for the afternoon (about 1 hour train ride).  The highlight for me was the Hiltl Restaurant.  It is vegetarian and mediterranean, buffet style and then you weigh your plate at the end.  This was a delicious meal!
